Who Are We?

Hello, and welcome to Muscle & Mat. My name’s Rob. I’m the one on the right in the above pic. I’ve been teaching fitness to group classes and private clients since 2005. I had some dance training from the age of 18-22, and aside from a couple years of baseball as a kid, had a pretty inactive life growing up. I couldn’t even skate, which, in a small Alberta town, rendered me quite peculiar. After volunteering with the Animal Voices radio show in 2003, I became more interested in nutrition and fitness, and joined the Y. I took some group classes as they were the only cardio that interested me. One day the instructor had an injury and was limping to class. “You should teach it,” she said to me. “Yeah right, I wouldn’t be able to do that,” I replied. “No, you should really consider becoming a teacher.” So I did.

My partner, Bryan, is on the left. He wasn’t active either growing up. But his story is different. He grew up an obese child and in his teens, he managed to lose 100 pounds and keep it off through yoga and fitness. If you ever want to learn how to lose weight, talk to him. If you want to know anything about anything, really, ask him. He’s an old soul. I think that’s what makes him such a good yoga student and teacher; his wisdom comes from the process of learning as opposed to the act of knowing. I ask him about his weight loss and yoga in this video here:

“Use your muscle, use your mat,” is our motto for combining fitness and yoga for a well-rounded concept for health. Thus, we are Muscle and Mat! And yes, we also have cats who have millions of views and followers themselves. They are Shorty and Kodi who together are The ShoKo Show.

We’ll always be focused on creating a space that’s happy and healthy, and we hope that you’ll join us along the way.

  1. I’m excited that more videos are coming soon and also looking forward to new blog posts. I’d love it if you guys did some sort of yoga/fitness program. Right now I usually choose from your videos at random when I do yoga at home, but it would be great if there was either a week or month long series that I could follow. Thanks for sharing your expertise!

    1. Yes, we would like to do that as well. Hopefully we’ll get something in the works soon. thanks for your comment 🙂

  2. Hi guys, I love your Muscles and Mat and your ShoKo videos; you guys are awesome. I was a fitness instructor in my 20’s and am now in my 40’s and am trying to get back into shape (and back to teaching fitness!) after some serious life losses and depression and anxiety contributed to my current weight gain. You guys inspire me to live a peaceful, healthy life, and to appreciate things like my two cats and to live in the moment. I was seriously inspired by Bryan’s story about being overweight, and how Yoga is something he looks to for peace. I would love to see some more fitness videos from you both. I admire the fact that you guys incorporate a spiritual and peaceful aspect to fitness and to life. Thank you for your work, peace to you both and to Shorty and Kodi! — Dayna.

    1. Thank you so much for your comment, Dayna. I’m sorry for your losses and hope you’re able to find peace in the moment. It is always a challenge, but I do find that having animal companions help, doesn’t it? 🙂

  3. Hello guys! My name is Alex and I am from Russia. Previously, I worked with the local yoga club hatha yoga, but the technique is not sufficient for the development of strength and body relief. I started looking for the right equipment in my Youtube and found Brian complex. Since then I have been working with you. I am glad that you have made yourself a website. Thank you and Namaste!

  4. Dear Rob and Bryan,
thank you so much for sharing your power yoga videos. I am so glad I found them on youtube and am enjoying practising with them very much. You both have a gentle voice which is nice to follow and I love your style of yoga, just right for calming the mind while building up strength. I love the dragon theme on the one video. Please carry on with your yoga videos.

    Big hug from Austria,
Katy and sweet cat Yumi 🙂

  5. Hi, Bryan,
I was following your power yoga instruction video for years and years and I never knew your name because you never mentioned your name. Today, I saw the website and decided to find out your name through it and yes, I got your name, now I can put it on the video. Thank you Bryan for making the video, it has helped me with my weight control.
